Report on Completion of Internship at WISE Program Partner Institute the Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency (FRA)
(MATSUMOTO, Course of Marine Life Sciences)

2022/10/11

I participated in a three-week internship at Marine Fisheries Research and Development Center (JAMARC) of the Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency (FRA). I was involved in two projects at the FRA. ( Fish School Aerial Image Discrimination and catch discrimination)

In the Fish School Aerial Image Discrimination Project, I implemented the top three programs of the competition on the computer. I built a computer environment and produced a virtual environment suitable for each program. It was difficult to match the versions of the CUDA and PyTorch programs that correspond to the GPU of the PC with the versions of the competition's program modules, and I learned that I will need to be careful in the future when porting the programs.

In the catch identification project, I set a goal for my project to identify fish by size as they flowed down the conveyor belt. I took video of the actual operations and produced training data from it. I searched the data for suitable data for training and used that data for training on SSD. However, discrimination by size was difficult, and only fish bodies could be detected.

I found that there is a desire in the field to improve operational efficiency by incorporating not only AI but also IT technology, but I did not have the means to take to achieve this goal. I would like to be a person who not only has a deep understanding and knowledge of AI technology, but also can easily explain what AI can do to the general public and contribute to solving problems.

Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency and all those who supported me during this internship.
