Report on Completion of Residentship at WISE Program Partner Institute Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)(MIYASHITA, Course of Applied Marine Environmental Studies)

2022/09/30

For two weeks from August 22th, I participated in an internship program at the Satellite Applications and Operations Center (SAOC) of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to investigate the relationship between vessels (mainly fishing boats) and physical oceanographic data (sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration, etc.).

In recent years, research has been conducted on the possibility of estimating fishery resources by understanding the movements of fishing vessels, and the importance of what information fishing vessels use to search for fishing grounds has been emphasized. This information is considered to include sea surface temperature, chlorophyll-a concentration, and ocean currents, but the details are not yet clear. Therefore, in this practical training, I worked on comparative analysis of the relationship between the location of fishing vessels obtained by AIS and satellite images, sea surface temperature, and ocean currents.

My research is on route prediction for fishing vessels, and I am very interested in how fishing vessels select their routes based on such information. Because of the short two-week training period, I could not discuss and consider it in sufficient, but I was exposed to a variety of data, including ocean model data and ocean observation satellite data, which I had never used it before. In addition, I was able to discuss the results of the training with about 20 JAXA researchers at the debriefing session and gained new knowledge.

I would like to make use of the techniques and knowledge gained from this training in my future research activities and make efforts to achieve good research results.
