EVENT2021/03/12

TUMSAT held Marine AI Consortium first general meeting and Symposium to Commemorate the Establishment of Marine AI Consortium on February 16th, 2021. These were held online to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Heads or delegates of each organizations of TUMSAT Marine AI Consortium attended first general meeting, and around 140 people attended Symposium.

At the beginning of the general meeting, chairman, Dr. Toshio Takeuchi President of TUMSAT, expressed an appreciation for their cooperation with the consortium. And stated that this WISE (World-leading Innovative & Smart Education) Program to foster AI professionals for marine Industries is in line with the action plans of TUMSAT Vision 2027 Version2, "High-quality education that meets international standards", "Original, world-leading educational programs in marine science and technology", "Develop human resources to support top- class research in the future". This program is vital to enhance the graduate school. He expressed his expectation that the consortium would promote it in cooperation with Marine AI development evaluation center (MAIDEC) which is also the core base of the consortium.

In addition, the general meeting included online tours of the center and video messages from program students, so we believe that we were able to specifically share the business objectives, contents, and activity status of our program with each institution.

At the Symposium to Commemorate the Establishment of Marine AI Consortium that followed the general meeting, there was the keynote speech by Shoji Vice President first, then lectures were given by experts includes members of the TUMSAT Marine AI Consortium. They lectured about examples of AI utilization in the marine field, latest trends in AI technology, and provided information that there is a great demand for human resources with knowledge of both oceans and AI. At last part, we had a panel discussion by all speakers with the theme of "human resources development related to AI and data science ". Iseki program manager acted as a moderator. They exchanged opinions and made comment that the most important thing should be cultivating expertise in the ocean firmly at first, and then, cultivating a wide range of perspectives including AI skills and the ability to find and solve problems by oneself, and so on.

This first general meeting and Symposium became a good kick-off for both TUMSAT (which is fostering marine AI professionals such as WISE program) and marine AI consortium (which is industry-academia-government collaboration aimed at marine AI research) to share awareness of the current situation and future direction.
