Report on Completion of Internship at Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU) (IWASE, Course of Maritime Technology and Logistics)

2024/04/22

I participated in the internship at "Section of Fluid Mechanics, Coastal and Maritime Engineering, Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU)" from 8th January 2024 to 20th March 2024. Prof. Ulrik Dam Nielsen from DTU invited me and we did joint research between one of his study areas, sea state estimation form ship motion, and my study area, applications of AI (Machine learning).

During this internship, I focused on the machine learning part. Based on the knowledge and simulation data Prof. Ulrik provided, I applied machine learning to predict wave spectra from ship motion. Finally, our research was made into a paper, in which I also participated, and we are continuing further research online after I came back to Japan. I worked with two colleagues tackling the same issue with different approaches and discussing problems especially in weekly meetings with Prof. Ulrik. In addition, I attended a lunchtime seminar held per two weeks in the Fluid Mechanics section, where we eventually gave a presentation on what we have done at DTU and introduced the WISE Program.

The research environment at DTU is pleasant and I especially feel my research skills improved significantly by working with professional researchers. Life of Denmark is also lovely. I lived in a shared house with host families and DTU students. I went to some places i.e. Copenhagen and Hillerød in Denmark, Helsingborg and Malmö in Sweden with my colleagues. Finally, I am sincerely grateful to Prof. Ulrik for the invitation. This opportunity became a valuable experience for me by your extensive support. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to Prof. Takenawa, Prof. Kino, the WISE Program Promotion Support Office, and all those who have supported this internship, especially for financial support from WISE Program.
