Report on Completion of Internship at Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency (HIWATASHI, Course of Marine Policy and Management)

2023/10/04

I participated in a two-week internship program from August 1 (Tuesday) to August 14 (Monday) at the Yokohama Office of the Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency (FRA).

The main tasks of the internship were the development of an algorithm for detecting the strong cohort of the northern Hokke school and the prediction of it using AI technology. The strong cohort is usually defined as the age group with significantly higher recruitment than in recent years, but here we also included the age group with significantly lower recruitment in the detection and prediction, aiming for more accurate estimation of the reproductive relationship.

In my work, I used open data such as those available on the website. Since I had not worked with actual data much in my own research, I was able to receive a lot of advice on how to process the actual data. In addition to my work, I also had the opportunity to talk to various people who work at FRA about their work, their research, and their career paths, which I feel was very meaningful.

I feel that I was able to have a very meaningful experience, which is not easy to have in laboratory. Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at the Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency for their assistance during this internship.
