Report on Completion of Internship at the Yokohama Research Institute and Yokosuka Headquater of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) (ETO, Course of Marine Life Sciences)

2023/06/27

I participated in the internship, which lasted for a total of seven days over a month from Monday 8 May to Monday 29 May, at the Yokohama Research Institute and Yokosuka Headquater of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).

The main task was to develop an automatic counting system for organisms from images taken by ROVs. Biological monitoring provides important information in the continuous monitoring of the marine environment, which is changing day by day due to global warming and other factors. However, the amount of data automatically collected by ROVs and other means is enormous, and it is not very efficient for researchers to check and monitor all of it. Therefore, this internship aimed to improve the efficiency of biological monitoring by developing a system to automatically count the target organisms from these images.

The work involved learning an object detection model and developing an object tracking system based on the data that had already been annotated. For deep learning, in the internship, I used the Earth Simulator 4 supercomputer owned by JAMSTEC. It was the first time for me to touch a supercomputer or a Linux-based computer, but I found it a very stimulating experience as I had never had the opportunity to touch a supercomputer before and did not think I would ever have the chance to do so in the future. Also, I had never touched object tracking before, but this internship gave me the opportunity to research it, actually implement it and even conduct experiments using the data. There are many aspects of this experience that I can apply to my own research, and I feel that it was extremely meaningful.

Although it was only for a short period of one week, I feel that it was a very intense and meaningful experience. Once again, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at JAMSTEC who helped me during this internship.
