Objectives
To further research the following details about the advanced cases of marine AI in the two Nordic Universities (DTU and NTNU), which were introduced at the 2nd Marine AI Open Seminar .
- The status of cooperation with the marine industry in data collection and AI analysis results, etc.
- How to develop hybrid marine x AI professional students
- AI environment in labs for data collection, shaping, AI model development and evaluation, etc.
The program faculty visited actual research and education sites together with the students to obtain hints on how to accelerate students' research on AI application, as well as to explore opportunities for future student exchange and joint research. The Program students were able to broaden and deepen their knowledge and insight through this visit.
Results of the visit
Technical University of Denmark(DTU)
On March 13, 2023, visited Dr. Ulrik Dam Nielsen (Civil and Mechanical Engineering, DTU) to learn about the marine xAI research activities in the Section of Fluid Mechanics, Coastal and Maritime Engineering at DTU and the research cases. The participants confirmed that AI is actively used in their research under the strong leadership of the supervisor (faculty advisor). They also toured educational facilities (wave making tanks, etc.). We TUMSAT introduced the activities of WISE Program for Human Resource Development in Marine xAI and the research of students in the program, and exchanged opinions on the possibility of student exchange in the future.

Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)
On March 15, visited Dr. Lars C. Gansel (Department of Biological Sciences Ålesund, Faculty of Natural Sciences) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Three companies from industry also participated as collaborative partners, and introduced to the status of marine xAI R&D efforts and demonstrations through industry-academia collaboration. In addition to the Biological Sciences Division, we were introduced to the Department of Ocean Operations and Civil Engineering (IHB) and the Department of ICT and Natural Sciences (IIR), confirmed that in addition to industry, faculty and students in the fisheries and engineering fields are openly collaborating to promote ocean xAI research. We TUMSAT introduced the activities of WISE Program for Human Resource Development in Marine xAI and the research of students in the program, and exchanged opinions on the possibility of student exchange in the future.

Both DTU and NTNU expressed that they would welcome the dispatch of PhD students and the acceptance of students from our WISE Program, which was the first step toward the realization of international exchange in the future.

NEMESIO ASAEL MELENDEZ RIVERA
My visit to the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) was a very pleasant experience.
It was truly a testament that, in order to carry out projects about AI, global collaboration can drive ideas and improve morale.
I am incredibly grateful to the Wise Program for letting me participate in this visit and share with an international audience my research at the same time. I learned a lot about how research was carried out in Norway and Denmark. Their management and logistics of collaboration between companies and students was very enlightening.
I truly hope that more collaboration between academic institutions will be possible in the near future.Once again, I am really thankful to the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) for having us.

Sota Matsuda
This was the first time for me to visit a Nordic country, and everything I saw, including DTU and NTNU, was new to me. While the development of offshore wind power generation is being actively promoted in Japan, both DTU and NTNU were actively conducting research on offshore wind power generation. In fact, many offshore wind farms were being built near the airport in Demmark, which could be confirmed from the plane. At NTNU, there is a global simulator that reproduces the construction of offshore wind turbines, and I was surprised at the scale of the project. The facilities at the other universities also seemed to have been funded by corporations, which made me realize the difference in scale between these universities and Japanese universities. In addition, the majority of students at both universities were able to connect what they learned in graduate school directly to their career paths, which was also a difference from Japan. I have not been conscious of going abroad much in my life, but through this experience, I have changed my mindset and would like to have more opportunities to go abroad and gain a variety of experiences.

Mitsufun Kano
In Denmark, we were surprised at the high cost of living, with hamburgers costing 2,000 yen. At the Technical University of Denmark, we received a warm welcome from students and professors, and the presentations were informative, well designed, and inspiring. As for the on-campus facilities, the rigs, water tanks and other experimental equipment related to offshore wind power generation were well equipped, reflecting the climate in Denmark, where the development of offshore wind power generation is thriving. In Ålesund, Norway, the snow and fjords were very beautiful. At the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, students have free access to a workshop where many 3D printers are installed, which I felt is helpful in promoting innovation.
The 360-degree dome bridge is an excellent reproduction of a ship's environment and is very effective in educating seafarers. I also felt that the Digital Twin experiment has potential to help solve issues facing Japan, and at the same time, I was impressed by the support system for venture companies. I hope that exchanges between universities in both countries will continue to expand in the future.
Summary of the visit (Comments from visiting faculty)

It has been three full years since we accepted students under the WISE Program, and due to the Covid-19, students had limited opportunities to form a global perspective as they were not able to participate in overseas exchanges. This time, the students were finally able to see with their own eyes the Nordic sites that are advancing with marine xAI case studies, albeit only for a short period of one week. As the students' fresh comments indicate, sharing their research results with PhD students from both DTU and NTNU was a stimulating experience that inspired them to further improve their own research. During the week, the students' presentations in English improved day by day, and the speed of their growth was remarkable.
From the perspective of the management of the Marine xAI Human Resource Development Program, the leadership of the faculty advisors at DTU and NTNU, as well as the scale, speed, and open attitude of the industry-university collaboration and the collaboration between fisheries and engineering students, are good references. We would like to customize and incorporate them into our own programs.
Both DTU and NTNU are open to accepting WISE Program students, and we plan to dispatch program students for internships, etc. in FY2023.
