【Motivation & Preparation】

My motivation to join this program came from my strong interest in marine science, particularly aquaculture and aquatic health management. I wanted to gain new perspectives, experience a different research environment, and learn from Japan's advanced technology and discipline in this field.

【Preparation】

Before coming to Japan, I focused on preparing myself both academically and personally. I started by learning about TUMSAT, its programs, and the research topics available in the laboratories. This helped me understand what to expect and how I could contribute during my exchange. Mentally, I tried to prepare myself to adapt to a completely new environment different culture, food, social norms, and lifestyle. Reading blogs and experiences from former exchange students gave me useful insights and helped me set realistic expectations.

【Class】

I took a variety of courses related to marine science and aquaculture. One of the highlights was the Aquatic Bioculture course, where I had the opportunity to present my research from Indonesia.

In addition to specialized courses, I attended a Japanese language class. Learning Japanese helped me communicate better in everyday situations, such as shopping, asking for directions, or interacting with lab members. It also made my stay more enjoyable and allowed me to engage more with the local community.

【Laboratory】

In the laboratory, I conducted my own research, and doing experiments together with my lab mates made the work more fun and engaging. During lunch breaks, sometimes I watched my friends play soccer, which was a relaxing and enjoyable way to spend time. Overall, working in the lab taught me valuable research skills while also highlighting the importance of teamwork and camaraderie.

life in dormitory and food

Living in the dormitory was comfortable and convenient, and I learned to manage daily routines independently. I really enjoyed Japanese food, especially matcha, ramen, and udon, which became my favorite dishes during my stay. Sometimes I also cooked simple meals from home, which made me feel closer to Indonesia and gave a nice balance to daily life.

things I enjoyed

One of the highlights of my stay was exploring Japan and joining local events. I visited places like Okutama, Odaiba, Kawasaki, Ueno, and Kamakura, Asakusa, and also participated in a hanabi (fireworks) festival, which was truly memorable. These experiences, along with everyday life and interacting with friends, made my exchange program exciting and unforgettable.

Some massage for the next participant

For the next students considering an exchange program at TUMSAT, I would say: take this opportunity without hesitation! Be open minded, curious, and ready to embrace new experiences. Learn some basic Japanese before you come, explore Tokyo and Japan as much as you can, and enjoy both academic and cultural experiences. Challenges will come, but every moment will be valuable and unforgettable.
