Second Year of Master's Program
A. S. W.
Spending half a year at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology participating in the Oqeanous Plus IJP Program was a journey that went beyond academics, it was a chapter of discovery, growth, and self-reflection. From the moment I arrived in Japan, every day brought new lessons, from navigating a different culture to learning how science and discipline intertwine in Japanese education. It was not only about studying, but also about understanding life from a new perspective.
【Preparation】
Before joining the program, I prepared myself both mentally and academically. I learned basic Japanese, read about TUMSAT's research environment, and studied cultural habits to adapt more easily. Most importantly, I built the courage to face new challenges and step confidently into a completely different environment, knowing this experience would shape my personal and academic growth.
【Study and Practice in Laboratory】
I chose the Fishculture Laboratory, where I had the chance to explore the harmony between science and nature through hands-on research and meaningful collaboration with passionate researchers.
My study focused on the bioremediation of aquaculture wastewater using microalgae, aiming to promote a more sustainable aquaculture system.
【Classes】
In class, I often joined discussions with friends and sensei, and gave presentations on current topics in aquaculture. I took three main courses, Aquatic Bioculture, Infectious Diseases of Aquatic Organisms, and Genetics and Biochemistry, along with a Japanese language class that helped me communicate better and understand Japanese culture more deeply.
【Other Activities as Exchange Student】
During my stay, I attended the JASSO Study Abroad Fair, where I visited several country booths to learn about different scholarship opportunities and joined informative seminars. The event gave me valuable insights about global academic exchange. I also had the chance to share my experience in Japan as an OQEANOUS Plus awardee, introducing my activities and research at TUMSAT.
【Favorite Cuisine】
During my six months in Japan, I tried many kinds of food such as Ramen, Udon, Sushi, Matcha, Daifuku mochi, and Gyukatsu. My favorites were Ramen and Gyukatsu because I often eat them in Indonesia, yet the taste in Japan felt completely different and special. One thing I learned through these experiences was how to order and pay for meals by myself--it was simple, but memorable. I truly enjoyed every dish and drink I tried in Japan; none of them failed me, each one was perfectly delightful.

【Best Season】
The best part of my stay in Japan was experiencing the sakura season for the first time. Seeing the cherry blossoms in full bloom felt magical, soft petals falling with the wind, painting the city in shades of pink. It was more than just a beautiful view; it was a peaceful moment that made me feel grateful to be in Japan and reminded me how fleeting yet precious every experience can be.
【Some message for the next participant】
To the next participant, be brave and open-minded throughout your journey. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, try new things, and make meaningful connections. Every challenge will teach you something valuable, and every moment will shape you in ways you never expect. Enjoy your time at TUMSAT--it will truly be one of the most unforgettable chapters in your life.
