Motivation for Studying at the TUMSAT

As the economic, technological and cultural center of Asia, Tokyo has a great deal of resources and opportunities. The area in which the school is located is close to Tokyo Tower and the Roppongi shopping district, providing easy access to the world's top oceanographic conferences, as well as corporate resources such as Sony and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. And Shanghai Maritime University and Tokyo Maritime University have similar disciplinary programs that I can learn from.

Preparations before leaving China

Before I arrived in Japan, I thought a lot about how I was afraid of dealing with all kinds of formalities, how I was afraid of communicating with people who didn't speak the same language, and how I wouldn't understand the lessons, but I gradually realized in the increasingly hectic preparations for the paperwork and the studies that it was no use to be anxious.

Classes and researches

Image_20250324134856.jpgI took a total of four courses at the school, including specialized courses and Japanese language courses. The specialized courses were recommended by my instructor and supplemented my basic skills. In one course, the teacher had us participate in a forum and talk to the person in charge of the product to learn about the application and principles of engineering, and I gained a lot from this class. In the Japanese class, I gained a basic understanding of the Japanese language, learned basic conversations and grammar, and met a lot of my classmates from other countries. In the research part of the lab, the teacher asked me to assist the students to conduct some experiments, which made me understand some commonalities and differences between graduate education in Japan and China.

Living in the dormitory

Image_20250324134918.jpgI stayed in a single room and our floor had its own rules. Everyone took turns to dispose of garbage and clean up after themselves, and Japanese students from other dorms were kind enough to teach me how to dispose of garbage. Each floor also has a communal kitchen, so it's easy to cook or store food in the refrigerator.

Traveling in Japan

I spent about a week in Hokkaido during my winter vacation. It was my first time traveling alone in a foreign country, and something memorable always happens when you travel alone. There is the pain of slipping on the pavement, the joy of losing and finding a train ticket, the admiration of seeing a lonely Christmas tree, the loneliness of walking alone in the snow, the comfort of soaking in an open-air hot spring in the snow, and the coziness of eating at a friend's house, all of which are valuable experiences in life.

Food in Japan

Japanese food is generally acceptable to me, with ramen and sushi being my favorites. I don't eat spicy food and I like desserts, so I like Japanese desserts and drinks. If you want Chinese food, it's easy to find in Tokyo.
