Report on Completion of Internship at Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (HORIGUCHI, Course of Marine Resources and Environment)

2024/01/05

I participated in an internship program at the Yokohama Institute for Earth Sciences of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology for a total of 11 days over a month from September 25 (Monday) to October 30 (Monday).

During this internship, I worked on the task of extracting features such as swimming speed from images of fish swimming behavior during and after feeding in order to use them as indices for determining feeding times. Specifically, I estimated swimming speed of fish using motion analysis software, analyzed feeding behavior based on swimming speed, and estimated swimming posture of fish using a posture estimation library. The posture estimation tool was the first tool I had ever used, but I was able to run it in one month thanks to a lot of information provided by my supervisors from the stage of environment construction. I was able to engage in the internship with such excellent support.

In the debriefing session on the final day of the internship, staff members other than the supervisors participated and actively offered advice and discussion after the presentations, making it a meaningful experience right to the very end. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology for accepting our internship.
