Report on Completion of Internship at WISE Program Partner Institute IDEA Consultants, Inc.
(HIGUCHI, Course of Marine System Engineering)

2021/10/18

In mid-August, I participated in an AI practical skills training camp organized by IDEA Consultants, Inc. The camp was held at a training institute at the base of Mount Fuji. There, I worked on system development to streamline tasks over a period of five days. Although the training institute was not air conditioned, I clearly remember that I was always able to work in a comfortable environment thanks to the cool breezes that blew in through the windows.

In the training camp, each employee introduced a challenge, and for five days we worked on system development to solve them. I took part in one of the challenges, which was to create a deep learning model that identifies animal species based on their calls.

Solving this challenge would help make ecological survey work more efficient. In ecological survey methods using audio data, habitat information for wildlife is grasped from audio data recorded by microphones set up at observation points. The habitat information is grasped by visually confirming the waveforms of the visualized audio data, so the challenge was to make this task more efficient.

The waveform data converted into images showed that up to four species of animals existed. I therefore decided to solve this challenge as a multilabel classification problem. Although I set out to create a deep learning model, solving the challenge was not easy, as the data used for the learning was biased. In the end, I managed to create a simple classification model thanks to support from the employees of IDEA Consultants, Inc. However, I was left with some frustration, as many issues remained before it could be used in practice.

It was a short but productive five days. Through the training camp, I engaged in deep exchanges with many employees as I worked. It was a sometimes fun and sometimes difficult experience that I hope to apply in other situations as well.

In conclusion, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who made this valuable opportunity possible for me. Thank you.
