Reason for applying to STP
I decided to apply for the STP because I wanted to gain short-term study abroad experience in preparation for participating in the IJP in the future. Through the STP, I was able to attend online lectures given by professors from partner universities, which helped me imagine what classes in the IJP would be like. It served as an excellent opportunity to prepare for a full-scale study abroad program.
At the same time, since the lectures covered fields different from my major, I realized that I needed a higher level of English ability than what is required in daily life. During the actual field trip, it was my first time visiting Thailand, and I felt that experiencing a completely different culture and interacting with people from various countries would greatly contribute to my personal growth.
Face-to-face program (field trip) in Bangkok
In Bangkok, I had the opportunity to interact with many students from across Asia and visit various facilities owned by Kasesart University, which was a truly valuable experience. The professors were very kind and shared their expertise at every site we visited, allowing me to learn not only through international exchange but also about Thailand's marine environment.
Since we always worked in assigned groups, I didn't just stay with Japanese students but actively communicated in English with other members. We worked together and enjoyed the activities all the way to the final presentation. Outside the program, Thai students kindly guided us on sightseeing tours, and thanks to their hospitality, I spent a fulfilling and memorable week.
Interaction with students from other universities
At first, I was worried that it might be difficult to communicate since none of the participants were native English speakers. However, I soon found that everyone helped one another--students who were good at English supported those who were not, and we even taught each other our native languages. This mutual understanding among non-native speakers was very inspiring.
Seeing students from other countries working hard to improve their English motivated me to do the same. My roommate was a Korean student, and we had many enjoyable conversations at night. Since I have been studying Korean, it was an especially good environment for me.
Memorable Experiences
I made many new friends from countries I had never visited before, and I was deeply moved by how kind and supportive everyone was throughout the program. It was impressive to see how we could connect beyond language barriers and help each other in different ways.
Through this experience, I realized the joy of cross-cultural connection and became more determined to pursue a career where I can contribute and grow in international settings.
