I learned a variety of subjects in STP program. This year, I studied at the Korea Maritime Ocean University in Pusan, Korea, for two weeks, including one week in Korea and one week in Japan. We attended and learned a wide range of lectures and seminars about ocean in these two weeks. In Korea, only students from KMOU and TUMSAT participated in the exchange program and conducted fieldwork. Total of 11 students, five Japanese and six Korean. The topics covered engineering, biology, environmental studies, etc.

The topic I was most impressed is about the training ships of the Korea Maritime University. There were two training ships in total, and those are larger than the ship owned by our university. I was shocked at the scale of foreign universities. The graduate school system of KMOU was also very attractive. The university has a research institute and facilities for conducting various experiments related to the ocean. There was a lot of research going on, not only in chemistry and biology, but also in engineering, such as wave breakers on the coast. Students can apply to do their graduate studies at this research facility and pursue their major.

In addition, we visited the National Maritime Museum of Korea, where they were able to see materials related to Korea's ancient relationship with the sea. The similar points between Japan and Korea made me feel closer to them, and I was also able to discover new cultural differences between the two countries. On a holiday during our stay in Korea, we went to Nampo-dong in downtown Busan and went sightseeing in the city of Busan with two Japanese students and two Korean students, which was a great opportunity to directly experience the cultures of different countries.

From the Japanese fieldwork, students from China, Malaysia, and Thailand also participated, and visited research facilities of the TUMSAT to conduct field research on aquaculture and marine ecosystems. At Oizumi Station, the students learned about aquaculture and artificial insemination and artificial hatching. At Idea Corporation, we focused on the study of the environment and ecosystems of Japanese rivers, learning about their diversity and sustainable management methods. In addition, a campus tour of TUMSAT included visits to the Shinagawa and Etchujima campuses to learn about research in engineering and ecology at both campuses. Some students from other countries have already decided to study abroad at TUMSAT for a longer period.

The program provided not only theoretical lessons but also practical knowledge and experience. I was able to understand the differences in values and broaden my international perspective and discussing about their own culture with each other was also a good way to learn English. In addition, by learning the marine environment and culture of other countries, we were able to notice the differences between the marine research and conservation efforts in my own country, and it was a valuable opportunity to make new discoveries. The knowledge and experience I gained through STP program were invaluable, and I feel that this experience will be of great use in my future career.
