Report on Completion of Internship at WISE Program Partner Institute the Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation

From August 22nd to September 9th, I participated in an internship held at the Ocean Policy Research Institute(OPRI) of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation.
During my internship at OPRI I was gladly surprised by all the support and guidance provided by the staff involved with me. Almost everyone speaks English very fluently. Everyone was very welcoming and nice. I was explained the importance of text mining and policy making for different Japanese Ministries. The core idea of my internship then became to apply the acquired knowledge and use text mining techniques to find topics and temporal trends inside PDFs from annual reports of the Panama Canal.
During the complete process we had multiple meetings that further improved my progress in text mining using a software tool called KH Coder. I am glad that I was able to use the acquired knowledge from my WISE academic classes to create a small script in python to further increase the speed in which words were filtered and organized. Filtering words allowed me to recreate a word cloud of the top 150 words used in the annual reports.
On the final day, there was also a presentation of the results, and we worked on creating slides. Employees who specialized in text mining and text tagging techniques for language processing also participated in the presentation.
I was even offered the opportunity to publish my report as a small entry in OPRI internal journal. It was only a short period, but I feel that I learned a lot.
Based on my experience with OPRI I feel that I have acquired useful knowledge about topics I had no idea existed.I would like to thank everyone at OPRI involved in my internship and express my most sincerely gratitude to the WISE program and OPRI for letting me be part of this interesting experience.
