"Dear all, I was an exchange student at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT) in the Food Science and Technology field, participating in the International Joint Program (IJP) under the OQEANOUS Plus Program from March to July 2024. During this time, I gained valuable experiences, made lasting friendships, acquired new knowledge, and created unforgettable memories at TUMSAT."

【Preparations before leaving Thailand】
Before coming to Japan, I prepared many important documents and selected the classes I need to take during my stay at TUMSAT. I wasn't worried, as I have several collaborators who assisted me at every step.

【Classes】
Before coming to Japan, I selected courses within the exchange program that aligned with my field of study and personal interests. I chose five courses: Seafood Processing and Materials, Food Functional Chemistry, Biochemistry of Marine Resources, Advanced Physicochemical Properties of Food, and Food Processing Technology. Each course was taught in English, making the content accessible and easier to understand. The classes primarily emphasized presentations and group work, which helped with time management and presentation skills. Some courses also included hands-on activities, like studying Japanese cold noodles, a summer favorite, where we explored the ingredients and even tasted the food during the lessons. This experience provided practical knowledge that will be valuable in my future work.

【What I did in the lab】
In this experience, I was in a food processing lab focused on the analysis and development of food and various ingredients. The lab had many international students, and everyone was very supportive. I had the opportunity to experiment with topics I was interested in, such as the physical, chemical, and structural analysis of protein powder samples. The work was manageable because I had guidance from others and access to a full range of equipment, allowing the lab sessions to run smoothly. Additionally, weekly seminars in the lab provided a platform to discuss presentations, offering insights into the rigor and significance of academic work. Moreover, participating in a Japanese food festival exhibition is an immersive experience filled with vibrant food.

【Japanese Class】
During the exchange program, we also studied Japanese, starting with English to make it easier to understand. The lessons focused on accurate communication, helping us apply what we learned in everyday life in Japan. Additionally, classmates from various countries enriched the experience, allowing for a valuable exchange of ideas.

【Living in the dormitory】
Life in the university dormitory was very pleasant. The facilities were well-equipped, allowing for cooking and ensuring safety. Although I had a private room, I never felt lonely, as it was easy to make friends with other students in the dorm.
【Interaction with Japanese students】
This exchange in Japan allowed me to meet many Japanese friends who provided valuable advice and support in my daily life. I also went on trips with friends from the university's International Club, which helped us get to know each other better. My friends taught me Japanese, which greatly improved my language skills and deepened my understanding of the culture in ways I couldn't experience elsewhere. In addition to my friends, I also connected with Japanese university staff who offered essential guidance and assistance throughout the program.

【Traveling in Japan】
During this exchange, I had free time on weekends and often traveled to various places with friends, both around and beyond Tokyo. We frequently visited shrines and went mountain climbing, as Japan is renowned for its sacred shrines and stunning architecture. Many shrines offer collectible amulets for good luck, which adds a unique cultural experience. Mountain climbing was both enjoyable and convenient, as travel by car is easy. Japan's mountains are breathtaking, allowing us to immerse ourselves in nature and engage with locals. I especially recommend visiting Kamikochi, a beautiful natural site that offers an unforgettable experience of Japan's natural wonders.

【Difficulties & Things I enjoyed】
I thoroughly enjoyed Japanese food culture and cuisine, with its wide variety of delicious dishes that kept me interested for the entire six months. Ordering through a smart tablet, which reduces paper use and allows for customized orders, was especially exciting. I also loved traveling by train in Japan, as it provided easy access to go anywhere I wanted.

【Advice for fellow students who consider to study at TUMSAT】
Based on my six-month exchange experience, I am confident that TUMSAT is an excellent choice, offering well-equipped facilities for both learning and daily living. The university is highly convenient and provides a supportive environment for international students.
