University philosophy

To carry out basic and applied education and research activities related to studies and to science and technologies concerning oceans, with a view to contributing to sustainable development of human society.

Program and goals for cultivation of human resources

It is necessary for Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, the only maritime university in Japan, to　serve as a core educational and research base for "learning about the sea in order to preserve its integrity and put it to responsible use" and to perform its missions, so that our country may develop as a maritime nation and play a role as an international contributor. Based on this platform, our university will conduct comprehensive education and research concerning the oceans, centering on training for highly skilled business professionals, including researchers, in order to foster development of human resources with the following abilities and qualities:

  • 1. Capability to deepen scientifi¬c recognition of the oceans, to present strategy for desirable utilization of the natural environment, and to put such utilization into practice
  • 2. Capability to act based on ability to think logically and being able to exercise appropriate judgment with a sense of responsibility to society
  • 3. Ability to recognize and understand various issues regarding modern society from a broader perspective and to exercise practical leadership in response to such issues
  • 4. Ability to address and solve problems based on having a well-rounded character, a broad understanding of cultures, and deep specialized knowledge and professional expertise
  • 5. Wide-ranging vision and skills, together with cultural literacy as the basis for international exchange

Areas of study

Our university is engaged in studies across a broad spectrum, focusing on the areas of environment, resources and energy, and including their composite and peripheral aspects.

History

Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine

  • November 1875

    Non-governmental Mitsubishi Nautical School was founded in Tokyo.

  • April 1882

    The private Mitsubishi Nautical School became a national school named Tokyo Nautical School.

  • April 1925

    Tokyo Nautical School became Tokyo Nautical College (duration of study changed from 4 years and 6 months to 5 years and 6 months).

  • April 1945

    Three nautical colleges in Tokyo, Kobe and Shimizu were merged into one college and renamed Nautical College (duration of study changed from 5 years and 6 months to 4 years and 6 months).

  • April 1945

    Kaimu Gakuin (Maritime School) was established as an advanced professional education institute for ship operation.

  • November 1949

    The University of Mercantile Marine was established, integrating Nautical College and Kaimu Gakuin. Faculty of Mercantile Ship was established.

  • April 1957

    The name was changed to Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine

  • June 1974

    Advanced Course of Mercantile Ship was abolished while Graduate School of Mercantile Ship (Master's Course) (Advanced Course of Navigation, Advanced Course of Engineering) were established.

  • April 1980

    Sea Training Course was established.

  • April 1990

    All the departments of Faculty of Mercantile Marine were restructured and Departments of Mercantile Marine System Engineering, Logistics and Information Engineering, and Traffic, Electronics and Mechanical Engineering were established.

  • April 1994

    All the advanced courses of Department of Mercantile Marine Research in Graduate School were restructured and advanced courses of Mercantile Marine System Engineering, Logistics and Information Engineering, and Traffic, Electronics and Mechanical Engineering were established.

  • April 1997

    Doctoral Courses of Mercantile Marine Research (advanced courses of Traffic System Engineering and Marine Information System Engineering) were established in Graduate School.

Tokyo University of Fisheries

  • November, 1888

    Suisan Denshu-jo (Fisheries Education Center) of Japan Fisheries Association was founded in Tokyo.

  • March, 1897

    The Fisheries Training Center was opened and managed by the Agriculture and Trade Ministry.

  • April, 1947

    Under the Ordinance of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the school changed its name to Suisan Koshu-jo (Fisheries Training Center) and Shimonoseki branch changed its name to Dai ni Suisan Koshu-jo (The Second Fisheries Training Center).

  • May 1949

    Under National School Establishment Law, as a result of integration of Dai ichi Suisan Koshu-jo (The First Fisheries Training Center), Tokyo University of Fisheries was established and governed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Also, the Faculty of Fisheries was established in the university.

  • April 1950

    Governed by the Ministry of Education

  • April 1953

    Advanced Course of Fisheries was established.

  • April 1954

    Fisheries Education Course was established (later renamed "Teacher Training Course for Fisheries").

  • April 1964

    Department of Fisheries in Graduate School (Master's Course) was established.

  • April 1987

    All the departments of Faculties of Fisheries were restructured and divided into Departments of Marine Production, Resource Cultivation, Resource Management and Food Production. Department of Fisheries in Graduate School (Doctoral Course) was established.

  • April 1996

    All the departments of Faculties of Fisheries were restructured and divided into Departments of Ocean Sciences, Marine Production, Resource Cultivation, Resource Management, Food Production, and a common course.

  • April 2000

    Department of Fisheries Research in Graduate School was restructured and divided into 5 advanced courses of Marine Environment, Marine Production, Resource Cultivation, Resource Management and Food Production.

The National University Corporation Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology

  • October 1, 2003

    Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine and Tokyo University of Fisheries are merged and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology was established (4 departments of Faculty of Marine Science, 3 departments of Faculty of Marine Technology, 5 Master's Courses and 2 Doctoral Courses in Graduate School of Marine Science and Technology. Office of Liaison and Cooperative Research as on-campus joint education and research facility, Field Science Center and Information Processing Center were established).

  • April 1, 2004

    The National University Corporation Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology was established.

  • April 1, 2006

    Department of Marine Food Science of Faculty of Marine Science changed its name to Department of Food Science and Technology

  • April 1, 2007

    Course of Safety Management in Food Supply Chain (Master's Course) was established in Graduate School of Marine Science and Technology. Advanced Science Technology and Research Center was established.

  • April 1, 2008

    Course of Marine Policy and Management (Master's Course) was established in Graduate School of Marine Science and Technology. Joint-use Laboratory Center was established.
  • April 1, 2009Office of Liaison and Cooperative Research was restructured into Organization for Regional Industrial Academic Cooperation. Fleet Management Office was established.

  • January 18, 2010

    Marine Observation Support Center was established.

  • April 1, 2012

    Meiji Maru Maritime Museum was established. Graduate School of Marine Science and Technology was restructured.
