Marine Exploring and Utilization

(Full-time graduate school courses, and joint courses offered through partnership with the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC))

The specialization of Marine Exploring and Utilization contemplates our future from a global perspective by learning about the world in which we are now living. With a central focus on the area of technological development being advanced by the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC), the driving force behind many world-leading extensive projects, this specialization conducts educational research through practical projects in research fields relating to ocean development technologies that include: robot and system technologies for exploration and work in undersea and ocean floor locations, audio undersea exploration and technologies for measuring such wide-area environments as the expanse of the Pacific Ocean, wave-activated power generation using floating structures, tidal power generation, airport and offshore plants.

In this field students will conduct research on the development of manned and unmanned submarine deep-sea probing vessels, the development of investigative technologies utilizing the sounds of undersea objects and the submarine environment, and ocean development technologies that use structures such as mega-floats and wave-activated power generators. Students gain knowledge of the issues involved in translating theory into reality and learn methods for solving those problems through investigating actual machinery and actual systems being developed, or in operation, at the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC).
To know and conceptualize the use of the ocean?a resource ranked as a core field in 21st-century technology?entails gaining knowledge that is relevant to all technologies, and forms the key to prosperity for the entire globe. Through this specialization students can experience the world-leading cutting-edge technology of Japan and participate in the planning of projects that rival other developers around the world.
