Ocean Sciences

About

We teach about and research into classifications, distribution, life histories, forms, and physiological ecologic characteristics of microorganisms, fish, invertebrates, macrofauna and algae living and growing in the oceans, as well as about correlation among marine creatures such as prey-predator relationships and symbiosis, and the influence of dynamics of populations and ecosystems on the ocean environment. Further, we include marine (hydrospheric environmental) substances in our education and research scope, from the perspectives of preservation of the ocean environment and utilization of marine resources.

We try to precisely understand marine physical phenomena that occur in various time and space scales ranging from mass global to micro through observations, experiments, analysis to establish ocean circulation and ecosystem models, and educate and research aiming at unraveling of underlying physical and biological environmental changes.

The students will learn knowledge and skills related to essential factors for unraveling and predicting ocean environment dynamics (e.g., the marine measurement system using advanced technologies and how to process various information obtained from that) as well as those that allow proposals of measures to utilize marine resources, preserve ocean ecosystems and maintain biodiversity.
