Education program

Education program
The program focuses on the four priority research areas of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT):
①Sustainable development of the fisheries industry
②Marine energy and deep-sea resource development
③Next-generation ship and navigation management technology
④Marine environment, climate change, and ocean observation
TUMSAT collaborates with six Nordic universities - University of Southern Denmark, Technical University of Denmark (Denmark), Norwegian University of Science and Technology, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, University of Stavanger, and Nord University (Norway)- to build a quality-assured credit-transfer study abroad program.
This initiative primarily targets students in Master's programs, fostering academic exchange between Japan and Nordic countries.

The purpose of this program is to cultivate highly specialized engineers who not only possess knowledge of economic security related to the ocean but also play a pivotal role in shaping the future of maritime industries. The purpose of this program is to cultivate highly specialized engineers who not only possess knowledge of economic security related to the ocean but also play a pivotal role in shaping the future of maritime industries.Specifically, the program aims to train professionals who can harness cutting-edge technologies such as AI to drive innovation, facilitate their social implementation, and contribute to improving the productivity and revitalization of the marine industry.
Moreover, they will take a leadership role in addressing global challenges related to the ocean.
These specialists will have: -
- Advanced knowledge in their specialized field of marine science and the ability to independently identify and set research challenges.
- Strong communication skills, enabling them to engage in open discussions and collaborate effectively with students and researchers from diverse fields, both domestically and internationally, to solve problems as a team.
- The capability to present new values and visions for marine research and industry, ultimately leading efforts to shape the future of the ocean.
-
By fostering individuals with these competencies, this program aims to create professionals who drive innovation and contribute to a sustainable and prosperous maritime future.
Through this program, our university, in collaboration with universities in Denmark and Norway, is committed to fostering globally active highly specialized engineers.
These professionals will contribute to enhancing the productivity and revitalization of the marine industry while addressing global challenges related to the ocean.
FEATURES
-
Hybrid Education Combining Online Learning and Overseas StudyHybrid Education Combining Online Learning and Overseas StudyParticipating universities jointly offer interdisciplinary online courses through active learning, creating a collaborative online classroom environment.
This online education is then combined with overseas study programs ranging from one to two semesters, forming a hybrid approach that enhances both students' motivation to study abroad and the overall effectiveness of their international experience. -
Additionally, for graduate students, including those in doctoral programs, we implement research-project-based and work-experience-based internships that emphasize hands-on learning in real-world environments.
SUPPORT
-
Comprehensive Support System Before Studying AbroadComprehensive Support System Before Studying Abroad
- Students benefit from extensive support even before their departure.
- Tuition fees at the host university are waived, and scholarships are available (subject to certain conditions).
- From the pre-departure stage, METIS coordinators collaborate closely with the host university to support dispatched students.
- Regarding accommodations, efforts are made to prioritize student dormitory placements at the host university.
However, availability may depend on timing and duration, and additional costs may apply.
Note: For internships, students are generally not eligible for dormitory accommodations and must arrange their own housing.
